Album Miles and Quincy - Live At Montreux by Miles Davis Review
The music that Miles Davis performed in concert during the decade before his death in 1991 has not really been documented that well on records, at least not until "new" releases came out posthumously. This double CD from the European Jazz Door label has a typical concert from one of the trumpeter's later groups, recorded before an enthusiastic and adoring crowd at the 1989 Montreaux Jazz Festival. In addition to the trumpeter/leader, the band includes tenor saxophonist Rick Margitza (who plays many strong solos), guitarist Foley and a rhythm section comprised of both Kei Akagi and Adam Holzman on keyboards, electric bassist Benny Rietveld, drummer Ricky Wellmann and percussionist Monyungo Jackson. The ensemble plays Davis' usual repertoire of the time and, even if the rhythm section at times seems a bit mechanical, the playing of Miles and Margitza makes it all quite worthwhile. Among the selections performed are "New Blues", "Mr. Pastorius", a lengthy "Tutu", "Time After Time" and the 19-minute "The Wrinkle". On "Human Nature", singer Chaka Khan sits in and, in trading off with Davis, they both quote "A-Tisket, A-Tasket". An intriguing and recommended release that may be difficult to find.Review by allmusic.com
