Recorded in Varanasi (better known to westerners as Benares), a holy city on the banks of the River Ganges, this album serves the practical purpose of providing background music for an art exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Instruments were rigidly tuned to avoid harmonic clashes as patrons moved between sections of the exhibition, while some pieces were recorded with percussion and others without to avoid rhythmic incompatibilities.
